Feedback - Unlearning antipatterns

Giving developmental feedback is difficult and requires long practice.

In his article on Negative feedback anti-patterns, Charles Axel-Dein, shares how a manager can unlearn the anti-patterns:

  1. Practice giving appreciative feedback timely and well as it is easier. This will increase the credibility with the receiver.
  2. Never deliver developmental feedback in public. The best way to share developmental feedback is during the 1:1 meeting with the receiver.
  3. Ask the feedback receiver whether you are able to communicate the developmental feedback properly.
  4. Acknowledge when feel that you have not communicated properly.
