Feedback - Unlearning antipatterns
Giving developmental feedback is difficult and requires long practice.
In his article on Negative feedback anti-patterns, Charles Axel-Dein, shares how a manager can unlearn the anti-patterns:
- Practice giving appreciative feedback timely and well as it is easier. This will increase the credibility with the receiver.
- Never deliver developmental feedback in public. The best way to share developmental feedback is during the 1:1 meeting with the receiver.
- Ask the feedback receiver whether you are able to communicate the developmental feedback properly.
- Acknowledge when feel that you have not communicated properly.
