Overcoming unconscious bias - Calibration committees
Research indicates that teams with divergent opinions can make better, less biased decisions.
Many large enterprises have committees for making final decisions on hiring, performance scoring, promotion recommendations etc.
Committees may seem bureaucratic but important decisions are best made collectively for achieving best outcomes.
Managers can calibrate their decisions with their peers or with their skip-level managers. Such a calibration process:
- provides an opportunity for the peers or skip-level to specifically call out any unconscious bias exhibited the manager
- helps the manager to become more self-aware
- increases the confidence of the manager to relay back the feedback to the team members
- makes the processes more transparent
